My client was founded over ten years’ ago as an investment vehicle to acquire majority stakes in B2B companies as part of an asset diversification for its family owners.

The group currently comprises eight trading companies with total turnover of c£100m.  Operating under a conglomerate structure with conventional group reporting, the business is well run and profitable.  A private equity approach to value creation determines that each company has a clear strategy across all aspects of its operations to deliver shareholder value albeit within a longer-term time frame than is the norm within mainstream private equity.  Potential acquisitions continue to be identified and targeted.

After eight successful years in the role, the current Managing Director will step back from day to day involvement and become Chairman from April 2020, creating the opportunity for a new full-time Managing Director.

With the remit to increase shareholder value and drive profitability, this will be a challenging role with a breadth of responsibilities involving the successful candidate in top level strategy, M&A and day to day involvement within the varied portfolio of trading companies.

We are looking for a high calibre senior executive who has previously substantially increased shareholder value and can demonstrate a good understanding of how this can be achieved.   Candidates should have significant experience in commercially focused MD / CEO roles across a range of business sectors within the SME market. The ability to manage multiple concurrent business demands and challenging people situations will be essential to success.

With a financial bias to the role the successful candidate is most likely to be a qualified accountant and have earlier experience as a CFO / Finance Director.  Previous M&A experience will add significantly to a candidate’s suitability.

There will be the need for regular travel within the UK.

Our client was founded nearly ten years ago as a spin out company originally launched by one of the UK’s top universities.  The business specializes in the design and production of high technology crystals which are used to change the colour of light.  Its top end customer base includes universities, research institutes, and companies worldwide engaged in a variety of applications including laser displays, quantum communications, atmospheric gas detection and precision sensing.   It is profitable, financially very well backed, and well run with a sound operational infrastructure and excellent sales channels.

The company has reached a pivotal point in its evolution.  It could continue comfortably at its present size, or it could seek out new markets and revenue streams.  The Board, with the full backing of the investors, has decided on the latter route and is now poised to embark on an exciting journey to accelerate the rate of growth and enable the business to fulfill its potential.

This has led to the appointment of a CEO who reporting to the Chairman will have full P&L responsibility and the remit to determine and deliver the business’s strategy for the next three to five years.  It will involve the successful candidate in identifying new markets and enhanced business development opportunities from within the existing client base, on a worldwide basis, to deliver increased and sustainable growth.

This is a new role in a small high-technology entrepreneurial business with multiple stakeholders.  It requires a high calibre and commercially driven, technology focussed professional with excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.  First class business acumen and the ability to quickly understand how the business works and how to maximise its potential will be essential.

Previous experience should include determining and delivering the strategy and leading the day to day operations of an entrepreneurial company with growth potential.  The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of global high-technology markets and how to identify, assess and deliver new revenue streams.  This will ideally be in the optics or laser sector although other physics, material science or electronics expertise will be welcome.  The ability to forge and maintain effective and long-standing customer relationships with international customers is of importance, as is an understanding of global business transactions.

We are looking for someone who is strategic, innovative, commercially focused and with the determination and tenacity to implement effectively and completely and to get the best out of people and processes.    Excellent IT and project management skills together with an ability to analyse and interpret complex information are essential.   The candidate must be prepared to travel.

Marketing Director



c£80,000 plus bonus and car

We are delighted to be retained by a leading and innovative developer and operator of leisure and hospitality resorts. Privately owned and Private Equity backed this international business has acquired eight UK sites which are now benefitting from a major multi-million-pound investment programme involving the rebuilding of holiday properties and hospitality and leisure facilities, and the overhaul and upgrading of services and revenue streams.

The rapid rate of expansion will see the number of sites doubling during 2019 and increasing to over twenty resorts the following year.   The company pitches itself at the upper end of the holiday park market and is amongst the fastest growing businesses in the UK.

The core of the executive team has been recruited and is now spearheading the profitable growth and success of the business.  The next critical appointment, who will be an integral member of the executive team and report to the Chief Executive, is a high calibre and digitally focused Marketing Director.  A broad range of responsibilities will involve the successful candidate in driving all marketing activity across the company with a strong emphasis on optimizing digital technology, tight performance management, innovation and commerciality.

The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of industry leading marketing best practice with a strong emphasis on how to maximise innovative digital media and website design and how to extend this across all marketing channels and materials.  He or she must be highly technologically ‘savvy’, analytical and numerate with a hunger to identify and assess industry trends and data.  The ability to drive the effective use of digital marketing to facilitate the company’s growth and maximise the bottom line is essential.  A genuine interest in and sound understanding of social media, e-shots, e-commerce and dynamic pricing mechanisms are paramount to success.

Previous experience is likely to have been gained within a multi-site and multi-revenue stream consumer-led business within the travel, retail or hospitality sectors and ideally involved the management of substantial growth and investor relationships.

Group Financial Controller

We are delighted to be retained by Crescent Motorcycle Company Limited, a long-established and very successful privately-owned group which runs three specialist retail outlets with multiple franchises and operates an international racing team.  Group turnover is over £12m and the business employs c40 people.

To continue its successful evolution and to ensure ongoing efficiencies, the company has recently restructured and will be moving towards a solus franchise retail operation enabling the company to provide even better specialist knowledge, first class service and a top-quality product range.  The restructure has also streamlined the finance and ‘back office’ administrative activities creating the new role of Group Financial Controller.

The successful candidate will report to the Directors and Shareholders and be responsible for all finances, IT, administration, legal and human resources.  As part of the senior management team, the role will span all aspects of the business, interfacing with each member of the team and will be hands-on and commercially focused.  It will be the number one finance role with excellent prospects for promotion to Finance Director.

This is a key role in a fast moving, challenging retail business.  It requires a high calibre and commercially driven finance professional with excellent interpersonal and communication skills not afraid to work “hands-on” in a competitive retail environment.  First class business acumen and the ability to quickly understand how the business works and how to maximise its potential will be essential.

Candidates should be qualified accountants and previously experienced the running of a group finance function with different revenue streams and where strong financial controls and cash management are essential to success.  This experience is likely to have been gained within the multi-site retail sector and ideally involved a breadth of responsibilities including all aspects of finance, HR, IT, legal and broader commercial administration.

Strong commercial, IT and project management skills are essential as is the ability to get the best out of people and processes to add value across the business.

A competitive remuneration package, including benefits, will be agreed with the successful candidate based on skills and experience.

Finance Director



£70,000 - £80,000 plus healthcare and pensions.  Accommodation is available if required.

We are working with a most delightful and energetic entrepreneur as he and his family develop a modern country estate with extensive property and land interests plus an exciting and evolving group of trading businesses including a top-end events and wedding venue.

Future plans will see the estate grow by the acquisition of rural land and properties and the development of new and existing revenue streams.  Turnover is expected to reach £5m to £10m in the next few years in addition to substantial value from its land and assets base.  A further development is the establishment of a multi-million-pound foundation to enable the family to continue to support selected charities.  There is a small team of permanent full-time office and estate staff based within the grounds of the family home.

Key to the success of these ventures and the long-term financial security of the family is the new appointment of Finance Director who will be responsible for the professional, efficient and profitable management of the various commercial activities and act as trusted adviser to the entrepreneur and his family.

We are looking for a high calibre and commercially driven finance professional who possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and who will quickly forge and maintain a close working relationship with the entrepreneur and his family.

Candidates will ideally be qualified accountants with a breadth of experience including setting up and running robust financial controls across a group of varied operating businesses.  Previous exposure to providing guidance on tax planning, trusts, charitable donations and investments will be of interest as will experience of acquisitions and the development of new revenue streams.  This experience is likely to have been gained with a privately-owned group of businesses, and preference will be given to candidates who have previously worked for High Net Worth individuals.

The emphasis of the role is hands-on, and it will require someone who can respond quickly and positively to new ideas with concurrent projects to manage.  There will be the need to be accurate, diligent, organised and tenacious with excellent IT skills.  Confidentiality and discretion are essential.
